Jaspers Brush House
A new dwelling overlooking a large property in Jaspers Brush, NSW.
The design seeks to provide a practical and inviting home for a retired couple. The design balances opening up towards the stunning views out to the north whilst simultaneously sheltering from the predominant winds from the rear of the site which are almost a daily occurrence.
The dwelling is seperated into three parts that can be open and closed off as desired. The central part of the house contains the main living, dining and kitchen spaces with a feature walk in cellar, while the western portion contains the master suite, and the eastern portion contains the guest accomodation for family and friends as well as main study.
Distinct axis of movement are defined through the house by the separated modules which capture cross ventilation and promote flexible indoor/outdoor spaces. Additionally an axis is established running east-west that separates the functional spaces from the activated spaces of the house. This axis is defined by a large rammed earth wall which passively stores heat during the day releases this heat as the temperature drops in the evenings. A palette of Galvanised steel framing, Corten roofing and cladding, and timber lined ceilings milled from the trees on the land speak to the vernacular rural aesthetic of the site and context.
